For patients with diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic kidney disease, a lower target of SBP ≤130 mmHg and DBP ≤80 mmHg is recommended.

For all patients’ BP is considered controlled when SBP <110 mmHg and DBP <70 mmHg.

How to measure blood pressure?

Use the appropriate cuff size, noting the lines on the cuff to ensure that it is positioned correctly on the arm. (If the arm circumference is > 32 cm, use a large cuff)

At the initial evaluation, blood pressure should be measured in the right arm; if the BP readings are below 140 mmHg / 90 mmHg, the patient is considered normotensive and will be advised to come after one year for a check-up.

The patient should sit with the back supported, legs uncrossed, empty bladder, relaxed for 5 minutes, and not talking.
